AIDS Education

As members of the commission who represent the county’s commitment to serve the best interests of the children in Los Angeles County, we are writing to voice our strong support for the development of a comprehensive educational program on AIDS. The Commission for Children’s Services supports the Board of Supervisors’ motion of Nov. 14, 1986, in which they urged the County Board of Education to develop a comprehensive program aimed at educating children about all behaviors they must avoid to protect themselves from exposure to the AIDS virus. In view of the fact that there is no vaccine or cure, education about how AIDS is transmitted or not transmitted is the only effective way of fighting the epidemic.

We find it encouraging that Stanford University has taken the lead in developing a course on sexually transmitted diseases, and that the Orange County Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with the Orange County Board of Education, is developing a program to educate teen-agers about AIDS. We hope this will pervade in all segments of our educational system in Los Angeles County as well.
