A test of a redesigned space shuttle booster rocket showed that new O-rings in moderate temperatures of 65 degrees or above prevented the escape of pressurized gases like those that shot through a seal and caused the explosion of the Challenger, officials said. The 90-second test at Brigham City, Utah, the fourth in a series of 10 of the new design, offered preliminary evidence that a primary and a secondary O-ring by themselves would prevent the gases from escaping, Morton Thiokol Inc. officials said.
