College tuitions have climbed nearly 10% a year in the 1980s, double the rate of inflation and 50% faster than personal incomes, a new study said today.

Tuition went up faster than any of the other major goods and services examined in the report commissioned by the American Council on Education, a lobbying and research group for more than 1,500 colleges and universities. But since 1970, tuition has gone up at a slower pace than medical care, energy costs and the price of new homes, the survey said.
