Declaring that she is not a communist, teacher and author Margaret Randall asked a federal judge in Washington to overturn an Immigration and Naturalization Service order that she be deported. Randall, a professor at the University of New Mexico, was ordered deported in 1985, after her request for permanent resident status was denied based on political beliefs espoused in several of her books. Although born in the United States, Randall became a Mexican citizen in 1967. She returned to Albuquerque in 1984 after living for several years in Cuba and Nicaragua.
