NATO announced that President Reagan has told U.S. Gen. Bernard W. Rogers to step down after eight years as top commander of allied forces in Europe, effective June 30. The announcement by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s civilian headquarters in Brussels did not elaborate on Reagan’s decision, which was expected. Officials said that Rogers, 65, also will relinquish his duties as commanding officer of U.S. troops in Europe in June. The outspoken four-star general, whose performance has been given high marks in Washington and Europe, was critical of Reagan’s proposal at the Iceland summit to eliminate medium-range nuclear missiles from the continent.
