Portuguese Students Strike Over Reforms

LISBON —
Liberal arts students at Lisbon University shut down their departments peacefully at the start of a three-day strike aimed at pressing the Portuguese government into negotiations over education reforms, school officials said Wednesday.
Jose Moreira, a strike leader, challenged Education Minister Joao de Deus Pinheiro “to a public debate” and said the student union “insists on peaceful action” during the three-day strike, which began Tuesday.
