In regard to Star Wars:
What Reagan and the right say: That Star Wars is a defensive shield that will make nuclear weapons obsolete.
What they believe: That they can force the Soviets into an expensive arms race that will bankrupt their economy and consequently make them accept U.S. hegemony.
What it is: Welfare (pork barrel) for the military-industrial complex that got Reagan elected in the first place!
