Mexico Power Workers Strike, Threaten Cuts
A strike by 31,000 workers at the state-owned electrical company began Friday, with union leaders threatening to cut off power to 25 million users in central Mexico.
Workers with the Mexican Electricians Union left their jobs at noon, saying they would cut the supply of electricity to Mexico City and the central states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Morelos and Mexico if their demand for a 23% wage hike is not met. Negotiations between the union and the government broke down last week, with officials saying the debt-ridden Compania de Luz y Fuerza del Centro could not afford a wage hike.
