Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland won the World Cup overall title when he placed second behind Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg in a super-giant slalom ski race at Furano, a resort on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido.
The second-place finish was worth 20 points for Zurbriggen, increasing his total to 294. Runner-up Markus Wasmeier of West Germany could score a maximum of 287 points by winning the remaining six races this season.
The finish was anticlimactic for Zurbriggen, who essentially clinched the title on Saturday when Wasmeier was injured in a fall during a downhill race and was sent home for treatment.
