Singer Wayne Newton stands to be $3.5 million richer after a Las Vegas federal judge Tuesday added that amount in interest to Newton’s record $19.2 million libel award from NBC. Newton won his lawsuit in December when a federal jury said NBC defamed him in a series of news broadcasts in 1980-81. In a related matter, NBC attorneys filed court papers objecting to Newton’s bill of costs in the trial, including Newton’s legal expenses for private investigators “who followed Johnny Carson around Las Vegas years after his deposition was taken,” the NBC papers said.
