Israel’s top soldier, Gen. Moshe Levy, chief of staff, will recommend that the Jerusalem government accept a U.S. proposal to scrap the costly Lavi warplane project, the independent newspaper Haaretz reported. Because of the Lavi’s expense, the newspaper said, Levy will drop his support and call for the purchase of about 100 F-16s from the United States. The Israeli Defense Ministry said last week that conclusions of defense officials on alternative U.S. proposals will be submitted this month for a Cabinet decision.
