President Francesco Cossiga named Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti as prime minister-designate today and directed him to try to form a new government.

Andreotti, 68, received the mandate to form Italy’s 46th government since World War II during a 20-minute meeting with Cossiga at the presidential Quirinal Palace. Andreotti served as prime minister five times during the 1970s. Socialist Prime Minister Bettino Craxi resigned March 3.
