The Communist Party weekly newspaper Polityka today for the first time confirmed reports of three assassination attempts on party leaders dating back to 1950, including one involving Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

The newspaper provided few details of the three attempts but it was the first report on the assassination attempts in 41 years of Communist rule in Poland.

The newspaper said authorities foiled a 1950 assassination attempt on Polish party leader and President Boleslaw Bierut. The newspaper provided no further details.

The newspaper said that in 1959, authorities found a bomb planted in a tree along a route to be followed by party leader Wladyslaw Gomulka and Khrushchev, then leader of the Soviet Communist Party.

Polityka did not reveal the name of the city where the bomb was planted or the date, although it is known that Khruschchev visited Warsaw and the northern seaport of Szczecin during the visit.

The newspaper said Gomulka also escaped an assassination attempt two years later when a bomb placed in the road exploded and injured two people. The newspaper said the would-be assassin was arrested and sentenced to death.
