San Diego Roundup : Conner, Isler Win Yachting Honor

San Diegans Dennis Conner and J.J. Fetter Isler have been named the 1986 Rolex yachtsman and yachtswoman of the year.

Conner was the skipper of Stars and Stripes, which won the America’s Cup off Fremantle, Australia.

Isler, of La Jolla, and Amy Wardell, of Newport, R.I., won the 1986 International Yacht Racing Union world women’s championship and the 470 European championship. They finished second at the U.S. Olympic Festival, second at the U.S. Yacht Racing Union women’s doublehanded sailing championship and fourth at the 470 nationals.

Isler hopes to compete in the new women’s 470 class in the 1988 Olympics.

The awards were presented earlier this month at a luncheon at the New York Yacht Club.
