Rebels in Mozambique Claim Battle Victories
Rebels fighting to overthrow Mozambique’s Marxist government claimed battlefield victories in five days of scattered fighting last month.
In a statement issued here late Friday by the Mozambican National Resistance, rebel spokesman Paulo Oliveira said from Feb. 6-10 the guerrillas killed 78 Mozambican soldiers and 34 support troops from neighboring Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
The battles occurred in the provinces of Tete, Nampula and Zambezia, according to the statement, which listed no rebel casualties.
Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony, asserts that the rebels are backed by South Africa, which the government of that country denies.
