U.S.-Israel and Spy Case
In your article (March 7), “Backlash in U.S. Against Spy Case Worries Israelis,” an unidentified Israeli official compares the Pollard spy case to the USS Liberty incident of 1967, in which our intelligence ship was attacked by the Israeli’s. The article described that incident as one in which “an American intelligence-gathering ship (was) sunk by Israeli aircraft and patrol boats.” It continues to state the Israeli’s continued claim that the “the sinking was the result of mistaken identity.”
In truth, although 34 American lives were lost in the attack, the ship was not sunk; it was miraculously saved by the efforts of its crew.
