About 1,400 people, among them former President Richard Nixon, filled First Community Church in Marble Cliff, Ohio, for the first of two memorial services honoring Woody Hayes, the former Ohio State University football coach.

Nixon eulogized Hayes as a man “who was never satisfied with success. He would never be discouraged by failure.”

Said Nixon, a longtime friend of Hayes, who died of a heart attack last week: “I found that instead of being just that tyrant that you sometimes see on the football field, that he was actually a softie, a warm-hearted man.”

Tuesday’s service was open to the public, but a larger crowd is expected this afternoon at another memorial service in Ohio Stadium.
