The planning commission Monday approved a proposal to build condominiums in woods loved by the late Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner.

The plan, approved on a 6-1 vote, allows construction of a 16-unit condominium complex on about two acres and the sale of the remaining 1 1/2 acres of woods to the University of Mississippi.

Opponents argued the development would destroy land cherished by Faulkner, including a nature trail the author once walked.
