Israel renewed its appeal to the United Nations to open files on 40,000 war criminals received from the disbanding International War Crimes Commission in 1948. At a news conference, Israeli Ambassador Benjamin Netanyahu said that the commission had been established with the purpose of prosecuting Nazi war criminals. "The files were collected for action. I must stress that point," Netanyahu said. He accused the United Nations of putting the files "literally and figuratively, in the basement." The panel's former member governments have rejected Israel's request for access to the files.
