Ex-Olympian Sets U.S. Breaststroke Record

Hiroko Nagasaki, a member of the 1984 Japanese Olympic swimming team now at the University of California, set a U.S. Open record of 2:09.76 in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke Wednesday at the U.S. Swimming Short Course National Championships.

Nagasaki, 18, broke Tracy Caulkins’ 1980 record of 2:11.46--the third oldest swimming record on the books.

Amy Shaw of Mission Viejo, Calif., missed breaking Caulkins’ record by four-tenths of a second in the morning preliminaries but could manage only a 2:12.25 second-place finish.

Tom Jager, the former American record-holder in the 50-yard freestyle, won the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 43.44 seconds.
