Ex-Rep. Carter of Kentucky Dies
Former Rep. Tim Lee Carter, a physician who was the first Republican congressman to call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, died today of chronic anemia at a hospital. He was 76.
He was known as an outspoken, combative politician. On a congressional trip to Vietnam in 1966, Carter was the only one of 14 congressman to tell President Lyndon B. Johnson, “No, Mr. President, we are not winning the war.” He called for troop withdrawal in 1967. Carter was elected to the House to represent the 5th District, one of the nation’s poorest, in 1964 and served eight terms before retiring in 1980.
