Hurricane-force winds and heavy rain left at least six people dead as the gusts slashed across England and Wales today, toppling trees and power lines and disrupting airline and ferry service.

The high winds, some gusting to 100 m.p.h., ripped copper plate off the roof of London’s Old Bailey Central Criminal Court, and Severn Bridge between England and Wales had to be closed for only the second time in its 20-year history.

The winds also caused flight delays of over an hour at London’s Heathrow Airport and disrupted ferry service across the Irish Sea.

Three men were killed when a tree fell on a van south of London. A construction worker died in a rain-caused landslide in western England.

A truck driver died in a collision after a gust of wind blew his vehicle into oncoming traffic near Shrewsbury, and wind apparently caused the death of a motorcyclist who crashed near Gloucester.
