NASCAR Tour Comes to Saugus

Roger Avants of Littleton, Colo., returns to Saugus Speedway Saturday night to defend his title in the $20,073 Miller 100, the first event on the 15-race, $275,000 1987 NASCAR Southwest Tour schedule.

Avants won both 1986 Southwest Tour races at Saugus. Finishing third in both races was Ron Esau of Lakeside, the tour’s 1986 season champion. Avants, 35, won the first race last year when the two leading cars collided with only three laps remaining. In the second race at Saugus, Avants needed no help. He led for 94 of the 100 laps and held off Troy Beebe and Esau in a close finish.

A field of 24 cars is expected, with time trials scheduled to start at 5. In addition to the main event, the track has scheduled races for Figure 8 cars and street stocks.

Another Southwest Tour race is scheduled at Saugus on Sept. 12.
