French Premier Jacques Chirac wound up his U.S. visit and denied that his country has been selling arms to South Africa, as reported in some leaked versions of a State Department report. The department is required to report to Congress any countries that appear to be violating the U.N. ban on arms sales to the South African government. The report is said to name France, Israel, Britain, Taiwan and South Korea as violators. At a news conference at the French Embassy in Washington, Chirac said, “May I tell you France stopped the sale of arms to South Africa 10 years ago.”
