Iranian Prime Minister Hussein Moussavi told Persian Gulf Arab states Wednesday that their interests lie in close relations with Tehran, not with the United States and Iraq.

“It is not in your interest to be with the U.S. but with a powerful Islamic republic,” the Iranian news agency IRNA quoted him as saying at a public rally in Tehran.

IRNA said the prime minister warned the gulf states, which have generally supported Iraq in its 6 1/2-year-old war with Iran, against relying on the United States for their security.

“We warn them that linking their destiny to that of the U.S. and Saddam will not have a happy consequence,” he said, referring to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

There is no weapon capable of defeating the Iranians’ “martyrdom-seeking spirit,” he added.

“This is what enabled us to stand against the U.S. and rub its nose in the ground,” he added.
