A mysterious substance that kills white blood cells has been found in the blood of people infected with the AIDS virus, scientists said. Canadian researchers told the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology that the cell-killing substance does not appear to be produced by the AIDS virus or to be directly related to it, but that it could be a predisposing factor that makes certain people more susceptible to the virus.
