Bettino Craxi was reelected as leader of Italy’s Socialist Party at a party congress that saw President Francesco Cossiga reject Craxi’s resignation as prime minister and send his government back to Parliament. Craxi, 53, obtained 93.3% of the vote at the congress in Rimini. Eight competing candidates polled 19 votes among them. Cossiga decided last week to send back to Parliament for a vote of confidence the Craxi-led government that resigned March 3 in a policy dispute within the five-party coalition.
