A senior Soviet health official was quoted as saying that up to 600 people in his country can be expected to die eventually of cancer as a result of last year’s Chernobyl nuclear accident. A delegation of British trade unionists and journalists who visited Chernobyl over the weekend quoted Ukrainian Health Minister Nikolai Romanenko as saying that radiation released by the mishap at the power plant was 15 times less than previously thought. The estimate of deaths appeared to be considerably less than Western projections, which have forecast thousands of deaths worldwide.
