The World : Truce OKd at Beirut Camps

Share

Shia Amal militiamen agreed to a cease-fire and the lifting of a five-month-old siege of Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut that brought many refugees to the edge of starvation, militia leaders said. The agreement was announced shortly after a convoy of food and medicine entered the Borj el Brajne camp, the first to get inside the camp in six weeks. Amal and Palestinian leaders agreed during a Syrian-mediated meeting in West Beirut to end what has come to be known as the “camps war.” The Amal leaders issued a statement saying the siege of the Borj el Brajne and Chatilla camps, in south Beirut, and a third camp near Rashidiyeh, in southern Lebanon, will be lifted and that a cease-fire will go into effect at 8 a.m. today.
