Concern over Soviet submarine advances prompted a House panel to delay money for a new $1-billion Seawolf attack submarine unless the Pentagon proves that it would be far better than its Soviet counterpart, the Akula, according to a report published in the Washington Post. The full House Armed Services Committee is scheduled this week to address the research subcommittee’s decision last week that the Navy try to improve the existing SSN688 class submarines while trying to design a sub that would be much better than the planned SSN21 Seawolf, the paper said.
