Sudan plans to abolish the harsh Islamic law system introduced in 1984 by ousted President Jaafar Numeiri, according to remarks by Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi reported Tuesday by the Sudanese News Agency.

Under Islamic law, punishments ranging from public flogging to limb amputations are meted out for such offenses as drinking alcohol and adultery.

Mahdi said the laws “are about to be removed and will be substituted by a legal system based on diversity so as to satisfy the aspirations of Muslims in areas of Muslim majority and to satisfy the aspirations of non-Muslims in non-Muslim areas.”
