Police took advantage of the New York Mets’ opening game to bust an alleged $73 million betting racket they said was part of “the backbone” of the Genovese crime family.
Three suspects were arrested and ledgers were seized by police who pushed past a cleaning woman as she left a New York City apartment at about 1:20 p.m., police said.
Arrested were Danielle Dike, 30, who lived in the apartment; Michael Evangelista, 40, also of New York City; and Patsy Capolongo, 38, of White Plains. Capolonga was believed to run the alleged sports betting operation.
Police said bets were taken by phone, with ledgers listing customers by code and winning bets in black ink and losing bets in red. The police were aided by tips and electronic wire taps.
