Redondo Beach : Colin Concedes Defeat
Unsuccessful District 3 City Council candidate Steve Colin, who asked for a recount and then said he planned to contest the election, said Wednesday he will not challenge the results after all.
“It would really cause more destruction and that’s not what we need,” said Colin, 30, an attorney.
The original election tally showed incumbent Marcia Martin, who has been on the council since 1983, winning by nine votes--563-554. Colin asked for a recount and he picked up four votes.
He said he could contest the election, based on questions about the registrations of 22 voters, but he said he does not want to embarrass them. He said it is also time for district residents to know who will represent them at City Hall for the next four years.
“My not contesting the election,” Colin said, “is going to force (Martin) to start representing the people in the district.”
Martin could not be reached for comment.
Colin said he also wants to save the city the cost of another election, which he estimates at $20,000.
He said he plans to run for the council again in four years. “In the meantime, I’m going to continue, I guess, being the concerned citizen that I am” and work on other political campaigns.
