Thirty South African coal miners were killed after an underground explosion at the Ermelo mine 130 miles east of Johannesburg. A company spokesman said 27 black and three white miners were apparently overcome by carbon monoxide fumes after a methane gas explosion 430 feet below ground. The rest of the 700 workers returned safely to the surface. The mine is run by the General Union Mining Corp., one of South Africa’s biggest mining conglomerates.
