CONFLICTS BETWEEN ARABS AND ISRAELIS

1917. In World War I Britain takes Palestine from Turkey and issues Balfour Declaration supporting the idea of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine.

1920. League of Nations recognizes British Mandate over Palestine

1920s and 1930s. Arab and especially Jewish immigration increases, Arab-Jewish riots and killings occur throughout Palestine.

1947. U.N. General Assembly votes to partition Palestine into Arab and Jewish States.

1948. Britain withdraws from Palestine. Arabs reject partition plan. Israel becomes an independent state. Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia attack Israel, are defeated and Isreal increases its territory.

1949. Jordan annexes the West Bank, Egypt occupies the Gaza Strip.

1956. Israel briefly occupies Sinai Peninsula.

1967. Egypt closes Gulf of Aquaba to Israeli shipping. Six Day War results in which Israel occupies Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, Syria’s Golan Heights, Jordan’s West Bank and Old Jerusalem, which had been controlled by Jordan.

1973. Egypt and Syria attack Israel, Israel counter attacks, driving off Egyptian and Syrian troops, crossing Suez Canal.

1974. Israel withdraws from Suez Canal’s west bank.

1978. Lebanon-based terrorists attack Israel. Israel invades South Lebanon, then withdraws in favor of U.N. peace keeping force.

1979. Egypt and Israel sign peace treaty.

1982. Israel returns Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. Israel invades Lebanon.

1986. Israel withdraws troops from Lebanon.
