China’s air force commander, Wang Hai, left Beijing on Wednesday for an official visit to the United States at the invitation of U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Larry Welch, the New China News Agency said.

The Chinese air force chief’s official trip follows a visit to Washington by Yang Dezhi, chief of the general staff of the People’s Liberation Army, and a visit by U.S. warships to the east China port of Qingdao in 1986.

China agreed last year to buy $550 million worth of U.S. electronic equipment for jet fighters in the largest military contract signed between Washington and Beijing since the Communist takeover in China in 1949.
