Manville Corp., which reported higher first-quarter profit and sales, cited “surprisingly” strong economic conditions in most of its major markets and efforts to reduce overhead costs for its gains. A spokesman for the Denver-based firm said it had significant volume improvement in its fiberglass markets and added its paper and wood businesses benefited from “favorable pricing conditions.”
