Brun, Schreiner Win 5th Race to Hold Lead

Skipper Vince Brun and crew Hugo Schreiner of the San Diego Yacht Club won the fifth race of the Star Spring Championship off Point Loma Thursday to strengthen their hold on first place in the standings. The final race is today at 1 p.m.

Brun and Schreiner, the reigning world champions of the Star class, also won Monday’s second race and Wednesday’s fourth race and lead the standings with three points. In each race, the winner receives zero points, with other entrants receiving an increasing number of points the lower they finish.

Paul Cayard and Bob Billingham of the West San Francisco Bay Yacht Club, who finished second Thursday, are also second in the standings with 22.7 points. Three-time world champion Bill Buchan and crew Steve Erickson are third with 27.7 points.
