More than a billion new people are expected on Earth in the coming decade, an increase that could pose catastrophic consequences unless action is taken to reduce births, a leading population researcher warns. The warning by Werner Fornos, president of The Population Institute, comes soon after a separate group, the Population Reference Bureau, reported that worldwide births have begun increasing again. Fornos’ study, “Blueprint for World Population Stabilization,” was released to mark the start of World Population Awareness Week. The world population is now about 5 billion.
