Sri Lankan authorities said that thousands of Sinhalese, the ethnic majority in the island nation off the southern tip of India, will be armed and trained by the military, then resettled in the area where Tamil rebels killed 127 Sinhalese last week. A government spokesman said that more than 5,000 people will be involved in the resettlement and that they will be armed with shotguns and other weapons. Military officials said 5,000 troops were searching for the guerrillas who stopped several buses and trucks on a jungle road and massacred Sinhalese passengers. Earlier reports said that 107 people were killed.
