Soviet dissident Fyodor Finkel and his wife, Svetlana, arrived in Austria, saying they were given permission to leave the Soviet Union after he went on a hunger strike for 40 days. Interviewed at the Vienna airport, Finkel told Austrian television that the couple received exit visas so that his wife could receive medical treatment in the West. He did not disclose the nature of her illness. Finkel said the couple hopes to go on to the United States. Finkel was jailed for 15 days in February for protesting the detention of Jewish dissident Josef Begun, who has since been freed.
