Soviets Conduct Two Nuclear Tests in Urals, Tass Says
The Soviet Union on Sunday conducted two underground nuclear explosions, the fifth and sixth such blasts since it abandoned its unilateral moratorium on testing in February.
The official Tass news agency said the tests were carried out in the Perm region of the Ural mountains. Each test had a yield of up to 20 kilotons, Tass said.
It said the blasts were conducted “in the interests of the national economy” but gave no other details. They took place a day after the United States conducted a nuclear weapons test in the Nevada desert. It was the fourth such U.S. test announced this year.
The Soviet Union instituted a ban on nuclear testing on Aug. 6, 1985, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan.
