Power Failure in Connecticut Brings Vandals, Extra Police
A power failure that plunged the downtown area into darkness brought out window-smashing vandals and prompted New Haven police to bring in reinforcements.
A spokesman for United Illuminating Co. said three transformers at a power substation malfunctioned shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, cutting power to about 7,700 customers in a 15-block square area.
Police Sgt. John Lehr said looters appeared soon after the blackout and large groups roamed the affected areas. No arrests were reported.
Lehr said police had a smaller force than usual because of the Easter holiday. About 25 extra officers were called in, including the entire shift that would have come on a few hours later.
