About 100 protesters demanding amnesty for convicted Basque terrorists disrupted a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Guernica in northern Spain by German planes during the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War. The protesters shouted demands for the release of imprisoned members of the Basque separatist group ETA and an end to France’s expulsion to Spain of terrorist suspects. An estimated 1,000 people were killed in 1937 when Nazi warplanes, supporting Gen. Francisco Franco’s nationalist forces, bombed Guernica in what was the first concentrated aerial bombardment of a civilian target in modern warfare.
