Ducommun Inc., Cypress, said it returned to profitability during the first quarter ending April 3. The company reported income of $6.3 million on a fully diluted basis, compared to an $18.6 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1986 and a profit of $221,000 in the first quarter of 1986. Wallace W. Booth, chairman, president and chief executive, noted that while “Kierulff, Ducommun’s largest operating unit, experienced a loss in the quarter, the company reduced its loss rate from that experienced in the third and fourth quarters of 1986. Bookings of orders strengthened in the first quarter of 1987 and daily sales rates increased. Gross profit margins, however, have not yet improved. . . . Profit levels of the aerospace segment . . . continue to be depressed by the suspension of production on space shuttle components.” Ducommun Inc. distributes electronic components and computer products to industrial and commercial customers, and manufactures components and assemblies for the aerospace and aircraft industries.
