S. Africa Police Face Students
Heavily armed riot police backed by helicopters today confronted protesting students on three university campuses, firing tear gas on two and making arrests.
There were no immediate reports of injuries from the confrontations at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, at Cape Town’s segregated University of Western Cape and at the predominantly white University of Cape Town. The confrontations came after a week of the most persistent and widespread anti-government protests since President Pieter W. Botha declared a nationwide state of emergency last June 12.
