No May Day celebrations were held Friday in Baghdad for the first time in 29 years, and the Iraqi press did not carry any commentaries marking International Labor Day.

President Saddam Hussein abolished trade unions and repealed labor laws in March. A government committee is now preparing a new law to regulate the rights and activities of workers.

Iraq had celebrated May 1 as an official holiday since the 1958 revolution that toppled the monarchy.
