Anti-government protests erupted across South Africa on Tuesday on the eve of a whites-only election, and there were scattered bombings and firebomb attacks.

A black man was killed and a white soldier seriously wounded in land-mine explosions on the northern frontier, two bomb blasts shook Johannesburg and security forces used birdshot and tear gas to rout black rioters around Durban.

There were also scattered incidents near Cape Town on one of the worst days of political unrest since the government declared a national state of emergency last June.
