Nixon Honored for His Assistance to French Culture
France’s prestigious Academy of Fine Arts has elected former President Richard M. Nixon a foreign associate for his assistance to French culture, a spokeswoman for the academy said today.
Nixon will be installed as the 300-year-old academy’s 15th foreign associate in a ceremony on May 20, joining the ranks of Salvador Dali, Federico Fellini and the late sculptor Henry Moore, among others.
Nixon was honored for developing tax deductions for U.S. citizens making donations to French museums. Funds from the United States went toward renovation of Versailles and restoration of impressionist painter Claude Monet’s home.
As an associate Nixon will not have voting rights at the academy’s weekly sessions but will be entitled to wear its elegant, braided uniform.
