Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres left for the United States vowing to continue his efforts to put together an international peace conference on the Middle East despite a government deadlock. During his five-day visit to New York and Washington, including meetings with Secretary of State George P. Shultz, Peres said he will “ask the United States what it suggests to keep the peace process alive.” Peres, leader of the centrist Labor Alignment, on Wednesday backed away from threats to break up Israel’s coalition government and force early elections if his peace initiative was not accepted by the 10-man inner Cabinet.
